ATF: West Explosion Cause Undetermined

Updated: Thursday, May 16 2013, 05:39 PM CDT

Authorities say they have not been able to determine the cause of the explosion at the West fertilizer plant that killed 14 people and injured 200.

During a press conference Thursday afternoon, the fire marshal for the state of Texas said the April 17 blast damaged a 37 block area around the plant, creating a crater 93 feet wide 10 feet deep.

An ATF investigator said the cause is still undetermined -- but three possibilities they are exploring are arson, s secondary electrical system fire or a recalled golf cart.

The agent said they "we will not speculate" on whether a former West EMS volunteer indicted for possessing an explosive device earlier this week is connected.

Authorities say the explosion was equivalent to almost 20,000 pounds of TNT. There were about 150 tons of ammonium nitrate on the site, including 100 tons in a rail car that did not explode.

Officials say there are no missing persons at this time.ATF: West Explosion Cause Undetermined
