Search On For Those Missing In West

Updated: Friday, April 19 2013, 09:08 AM CDT

It's just more than 24 hours after the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas -- and the focus turns to the search for the missing. Official figures are five to 15 dead, but that is expected to rise in the coming days.

Fire marshals, the ATF and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality are continuing to work to stabilize the blast zone.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is still not confirming how many are dead but they do say there are multiple casualties. Search and rescue efforts will continue through the night.

The community of about 2,800 hundred rocked by the explosion continues to try to come to grips with the devastation and destruction.

Attorney General Greg abbot toured the four block radius leveled by the blast -- from the ground and by air. He saw railroad tracks fused together, a playground destroyed and neighborhoods that look like they are in the middle of a war zone.

"These homes that are close are literally blown apart and blown open and so the devastation is immense," he said.

The nursing home where authorities evacuated 133 seniors is also in shambles. "Many of the walls are blown in all the windows are blown out, the doors are blown down the roof is blown up," Abbott says.

Also, two schools were ripped apart by the blast.  "Had this explosion taken place at a time during school hours there would have been mass devastation of children. Fortunately, that didn't happen," Abbott said.

No word yet on when residents will be let back into the area around the blast site. But most know they will have very little to come back to.
