Texas Mobilizes To Help West

Updated: Thursday, April 18 2013, 06:53 PM CDT
The explosion at the fertilizer plant in West has prompted many Texans to take action. There's been an outpouring of support from people looking to help -- but there's still plenty to be done.

The Texas Food Bank Network has mobilized to help the victims of the blast. Here in Austin, the Capital Area Food Bank continues to assemble care packages filled with water and supplies. Twenty-one Texas food banks -- scattered across the state -- are accepting donations.

Meanwhile, blood centers are in desperate need of donors.  Take a look at the line that has been forming outside of a blood center in Waco.  The rain and wind isn't keeping people away.  But despite the turnout, there is still a great need for o-positive and o-negative blood.

The Blood Center of Central Texas tells me they've sent 20 units of o-negative blood to help the victim in West.  But much more is needed.

"Every day we need approximately 200 units of blood just to meet the needs of the local Central Texas patient population.  So we encourage everyone to donate four times a year so that we can keep a constant, stable supply on our shelves," said spokeswoman Cynthia Rowe.

Rowe tells KEYE TV The Blood Center of Central Texas currently have an adequate supply of blood to meet the needs to Central Texas residents.  But there isn't enough to donate in case of another emergency.
