West Football Field Center Of Controversy

Updated: Wednesday, June 12 2013, 11:53 AM CDT

The West Independent School District football field is the center of controversy.  The school district, crippled by the West explosion, continues to rebuild, but plans to put new turf on the football field are on hold.

The night of the West Explosion the football field was used as a triage, and now remnants of medical supplies are everywhere. Volunteers say they are finding things like hypodermic needles and used gloves.

"We got to move forward because we're going to play football there this year," West ISD Superintendent Marty Crawford said.

At the end of May, the district considered building a new field with artificial turf, but changed their minds after Congressman Bill Flores told them that the purchase may jeopardize the district’s chances for FEMA dollars.

The district will instead repair the grass, which may cost more money in the long run. Superintendent Crawford says it’s time to move forward no matter what.

"I think we'll get over this football stadium thing so we can get kids back in school and back to normal."
