Firefighters Look Back On Spicewood Wildfire One Year Later
Updated: Tuesday, September 4 2012, 02:50 PM CDT
The devastation was massive, nearly 6,500 acres charred with the fire destroying more than 60 structures. KEYE TV spoke to fire fighters who were on the front lines of the Spicewood wildfire and are now taking a look back one year later.
"Everybody is extremely scared and nervous and it's coming to that one year anniversary of the fires last year,” says Jared Mikeska with the Pedernales Fire Department.
The reason? Weather conditions are starting to mirror last year.
"We are at the point where it's the exact same situations that we were in last year,” says Mikeska. Including high winds, no rain, and high temperature. "And the trees that were affected by the fire are dead and more dry than what they were last year.”
Local fire fighters that helped combat the blaze say educating the public to be fire ready has been their mission since the fire was extinguished 11 days after it started on September 15.
After a yearlong investigation the Travis County Fire Marshal's Office deemed the fire accidental - pointing to power lines that came in contact that sparked the fire on the ground below.
