A controversial license plate may soon be showing up on the bumpers of cars in Texas.
Thursday afternoon Governor Rick Perry will announce his support for the Choose Life plate. Choose Life plates are already on the road in 19 states and Texas may be the 20th.
The plates promote adoption as an alternative to abortion. There's a $30 fee for the plate and $22 goes to help women experiencing a crisis pregnancy. The other $8 covers Texas Department of Transportation's production costs.
The state legislature must pass a bill to create the Texas Choose Life license plate. House bill 109 was pre-filed in November and will come before Texas legislators during the 2009 legislative session, which begins in January.
Texas already has more than 130 specialty license plates. The Texas Department of Transportation has an administration procedure for directly creating specialty plates. But the plates are not a candidate for this process because the message is too controversial.
Perry will announce his support of the license plate at a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
