12THMAN License Plate Up For Bids

Updated: Monday, August 12 2013, 07:51 PM CDT

Tradition runs deep at Texas A&M University, and now for the first time the rights to the 12THMAN license plate are up for grabs through an online auction with MyPlates.com.

Kim Miller Drummond with MyPlates.com said proceeds from the state's A&M specialty plates have outsold all other college license plates in Texas, which has helped raised about $3 million for scholarships since 1990.

"This puts it out there for the proudest fan, the former student to say I really want to be the one and only person with the license plate," Drummond said.

The extra revenue from the personal plates is a win-win for the university and the state of Texas. In the last four years custom plates poured in $18.5 million to the state's general revenue fund.

This is the first time 12THMAN has ever been available on a Texas license plate, and it could be the last. Until recently only six letters could fit on vanity plates. Drummond said the new seven letter inventory is bringing a high demand for highly sought after plates, and auctions are the wave of the future.

"We've learned Texas' appetite for special plates," Drummond said.

It's a big appetite for hungry bidders. The highest priced plates ever sold were "HOUSTON" for $25,000, "ROCKETS" for $16,500, "FERRARI" for $15,000, and "COWBOYS" for $11,500.

"If you could put some dollar signs and some numbers next to aggie pride, their emotion, and their passion around that 12th man tradition we are guessing it's going to go well beyond the $25,000 mark," Drummond said.

The winner of the MyPlates.com 12THMAN Auction wins this plate for a 10-year term, with first dibs on renewing the plate after that. The winner also has full rights to transfer or sell the plate to someone else.

As a special honor, A&M will present the 12THMAN license plate to the My Plates auction winner in front of nearly 90,000 fans during the Texas A&M vs. Alabama game September 14.
