A Major Next Step

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
Major Applewhite will run the Texas offense once again.

A move five seasons in the making, Applewhite’s job as co-offensive coordinator now involves making all final decisions in terms of the offense.

In January 2008 the former UT quarterback returned to Texas to coach the running backs.  He had spent one season at Alabama as offensive coordinator, but the opportunity to come back to the Forty Acres was too much to pass up.

Mack Brown’s long-term plan for Applewhite was to take over the offense one day.  Brown admitted after 2010 he could have made the job Major’s, but wanted to wait.

"I told Major two years ago that I felt like it would be unfair to put him in the position right after Greg Davis,” Brown said.  “He played for Greg, he coached with Greg, and I didn’t think he’d ever have a chance for it to be Major’s input.

It’s heavily his input now.  Applewhite had a knack for getting the job done in big situations while at Texas under center.  With the chance to do it again, Brown believes he was made for this moment.

“He'll be a star."
