A Simple Device That Could Save Lives

Updated: Thursday, November 1 2012, 09:04 PM CDT

Studies continue to reveal just how damaging head injuries are, and even scarier, at how young an age they begin.  One company is taking on the challenge of decreasing repeated injuries, in hopes they can save lives in the process.

Battle Sports Science has developed a product called the Impact Indicator.  It is a chinstrap that helps detect head injuries.  When a player takes any kind of hit to the head, the indicator measures whether or not that hit exceeds a certain force and duration.

If it does exceed those calculations, a red light illuminates.  That doesn’t guarantee that the player has sustained a concussion, but it does give a great indication that the hit the player took was with enough power to garner further tests for a concussion.

"Symptoms often times aren't shown immediately,” says Vice President of Marketing and Communications Cort Irish.  “This is a device that helps get players off the field before more serious injury may occur."

Thousands of players ranging from 5th grade to the NFL are using this chinstrap.
