Austin's Soccer Team Moves Up The Professional Ranks

Updated: Tuesday, June 10 2014, 07:01 PM CDT

They got all the talent of a professional soccer team, now the Austin Aztex will officially be one. Starting in 2015, the Austin Aztex will join the USL PRO.

"USL Pro will allow us to have an expanded season, we will be able to train players year round, our players and coaches will be able to be involved in the community year round," says Austin Aztex Chairman David Markley.

The level they are now competing on is a premier development league. USL PRO is a proven path towards major league soccer and very high level of competition with pay.

"Certainly we're excited about the opportunity to have players earn their income playing pro and that's what all those players aspire to do and if we can help them achieve those dreams, we'd love to be able to do it," says Markley.

Among the changes is also the addition of new high powered co-owners.

"We are pleased to add Bobby Epstein and Paul Thornton and to our ownership group," says Markley.

Bobby is founder and chairman of the Circuit of the Americas and Paul founded and built up one of the largest independent live entertainment promotions companies in the country.

But does this mean we could be getting a soccer stadium soon?

"Certainly that's the dream, I think what today's announcement does is allows us to have those conversation in a different light than we could previously," says Markley.
