Bob's Blog: Thank You Military

Updated: Monday, November 11 2013, 11:10 PM CST

Tom Landry was in a plane crash in Belgium in April of 1945 after completing a bombing run during World War II.  He survived - and while his ensuing time with the longhorns and cowboys became legendary, his job as an army pilot is what really makes him a legend.

Landry is just one example of thousands of men who served our country in the military and returned to play the role of hero in sport - when in reality - they are heroes for protecting our country.

Thank you for that.  Thank you for dedicating a portion of your life to make sure we can live free.  From Tom Landry in World War II to Ahmard Hall in Afghanistan … from George Halas in World War I to Roger Staubach in Vietnam.  Thank you, not just today, but 365 days a year.

The next time you see a military man or woman - at an airport, at a grocery store, at a gas station - stop them and thank them.  They don't just deserve that - they've earned it.

We all know that often times in sports words like war, battle and hero are misused as actual sporting terms.  Thank you for putting up with us when we make mistakes like that.  Because - as UT deep snapper and Army Special Forces Green Beret Nate Boyer can attest - we all take things for granted.
