Brutally Honest Rick Barnes Calls Out His Basketball Team

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
Wednesday's loss to West Virginia was UT's second straight in Big 12 play, in overtime, in a game in which the Horns held a second half lead. But that is not the deja vu that's getting under Rick Barnes' skin.

"It's the same thing over and over and over again," said a frustrated Rick Barnes after the loss. "I actually told them after the Baylor game [an overtime loss Saturday], if I were a business man I would fire them all."

The only firing done Wednesday night was of the ill-advised shot variety. And following the ugly loss to the Mountaineers, a game in which Texas couldn't pull down a rebound - Barnes pulled no punches, calling out his team's effort and toughness.

"Nothing hurts more than when you watch the other team want the game more than you," said Barnes."

"It's not being tough," said Texas forward Jonathan Holmes. "We didn't finish the game at Baylor, we didn't finish the game tonight. At the end of the day, you just have to go get the ball."

Toughness is tough to measure. Offensive ineptitude is not. Stats don't lie. The Longhorns rank dead last in the Big 12 in rebounding defense and turnover margin. Texas is ninth in scoring offense, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.

"One thing I know about players, they know exactly what coaches know," said Barnes.

Despite starting 0-and-2 in conference play for the first time since 1998, the year before Barnes came to Austin - Texas, a team looking up at everyone else in the league, is not giving up.

"One thing I'm not going to do: I'm not giving in," said Barnes.

Texas travels to Iowa State Saturday before hosting 6th ranked Kansas next weekend.Brutally Honest Rick Barnes Calls Out His Basketball Team
