Carrying the Clemens Name

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT

There was a time when the only thing tougher than carrying a bat and digging in against Roger Clemens was carrying the "Clemens" name.

"People started saying things to us on the field," recalled Roger's third son Kacy. "You know, derogatory things while we were playing."

From the time Roger Clemens first appeared before a congressional committee about steroids use in 2008, until 2012 when he was found not guilty for lying to that congressional committee, there was one constant. Roger's family was by his side. Like a Clemens fastball, his sons stayed high and tight.

"We were just supporting each other on what was going on in the courtroom and everything," said Kody, Roger's youngest son. "The truth prevails."

"It was tough on our family," said Kacy. "But we are very very strong and very tight, and nothing can separate us."

The Clemens are still sticking together. Kody, the youngest of Roger's four boys is a sophomore on the Memorial High School baseball team in Houston. Kacy Clemens is a senior for the Mustangs.

"It's only one game to go to, so that helps us," said Roger. "They're enjoying it. They're in high school and getting after it."

"Kody is probably my toughest," admitted Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner. "With his older three brothers beating on him all the time."

While Kody says he's been pushed (and pushed around), both boys point to their pops as a source for everything from their name to their game.

"Watching what he's done and what he's gone through, he's still been such a great Dad," said Kacy. "He hasn't pulled us down or separated our family at all. He's stayed strong. I'm the man I am today because of him."

And Kacy, who wears number 21 just like his father, is signed to play baseball at Texas next season - just like his father.

"It's a big deal for me and my family," said Kacy. "We are excited for the next years to come. Hopefully I can continue the legacy my Dad left."

At one time, carrying the Clemens name was more frustrating than an umpire with a wicked tight strike zone. But like their Dad on the mound, Roger's kids never backed down.
