Longhorns Advance at U.S. Amateur

Updated: Wednesday, August 14 2013, 11:01 PM CDT

Texas Men's Golf incoming freshman Gavin Hall punched his ticket to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Championship with a 2&1 victory over Bo Andrews (Raleigh, N.C.) Wednesday afternoon at The Country Club.

Hall claimed a fast 1 up lead over Andrews after making a par on the first hole, and he went to 2 up when Andrews made a second bogey on No. 4. Andrews rebounded with the duo’s first birdie of the day on the very next hole to cut Hall’s lead to one, but he could never come any closer. Hall’s lead fluctuated until the 14th hole where his birdie putt kept him 2 up on Andrews for the remainder of the match.

Hall is scheduled to face Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt Thursday morning at 7:40 a.m. Central in the Round of 32.

Scottie Scheffler, a Highland Park HS senior who is verbally committed to Texas, also advanced to the Round of 32 with a victory over Stewart Jolly.

Also Wednesday, Australia’s Oliver Goss defeated Texas senior Toni Hakula 1 up to end Hakula’s run to the Havemeyer Trophy.

Hall and Hakula began Wednesday by competing in a 17-for-15 playoff to complete the 64-player match play field.Longhorns Advance at U.S. Amateur
