River Flooding along the Blanco and San Marcos Rivers/Flash Flood Watch

Sunday May 24th, 2015

REST OF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Heavy rains have moved out of Central Texas.  Sunday was mainly mostly cloudy and mild. Highs ranged from the upper 70s to lower 80s.  Flood Warnings continue along the Blanco and San Marcos rivers.  Sunday night, only isolated showers/storms will be possible through early Monday morning.

Another storm system approaches overnight and another round of strong to severe storms is likely for Monday.  This time I am expecting the heaviest of rains around midday to the afternoon time frame.  Flash flooding is again a likely bet, which is very bad news for Central Texas.  Rainfalls totals of 1-2” on average with locally higher amounts of 3-5”+ are expected.  Remember, Turn Around. Don’t Drown.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The week ahead will have rain chances each of the 7 days, with rain chances increasing for the latter half of the week going into the weekend.  Heavy rain again is possible for the Thursday through Saturday period.

HISTORIC FLOODING

The Blanco River rose to historic levels - more than 40 feet - in Wimberley and points downstream after between 9-10" of rain fell in Blanco, streamed into the Blanco River and pushed downstream.  Flooding continued down the Blanco River to San Marcos and down the Blanco and San Marcos River to Martindale and on towards Luling.

THE LAKES

Lake Travis rose to 47% and continue to rise Sunday.  Lake Travis jumped to 52% full with Lake Buchanan at 40% full.  Amazing recovery - highest at Lake Travis since Memorial Day 2012.

MEMORIAL DAY FLOODS OF 1981

If you need a reminder to Turn Around Don't Drown - just look back at history.  Central Texas is known as "Flash Flood Alley."  On May 24th, 1981, 13 people lost their lives.  Floodwaters rose out of Shoal Creek and caused significant damage to homes and business and caught a lot of people off guard.  Here's a photo gallery from the storm: https://www.flickr.com/photos/austintexasgov/sets/72157626196677382/

Marquise Goodwin Drafted by Bills

Updated: Friday, April 26 2013, 10:49 PM CDT

Texas WR Marquise Goodwin was taken with the 78th overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft on Friday.

“Marquise, in my opinion, has his best football ahead of him,” said Texas head coach Mack Brown. “He was such a star in track-winning the World Games in the long jump, being an Olympian, which was a goal of his and we sure didn’t want to get in the way. But because of that, he was never in a spring practice, and he was never around in the summer. He has tremendous skills-leaping ability, speed, and hand-eye coordination. He his tough and can be a kick returner as well. We think he has a great up side and someone will be lucky to get him.”

Goodwin becomes the first Longhorn taken by the Buffalo Bills since Aaron Williams was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The Buffalo Bills have now taken a total of eight Texas Longhorns including Goodwin. Former picks also include OT Mike Williams (1st round, 2002), TE Pat Fitzgerald (7th round, 1997), DT James Patton (2nd round, 1992), TE Stephen Clark (12th round, 1991), S John Hagy (8th round, 1988)and G Will Wilcox (13th round, 1976).

Goodwin will join fellow Longhorns Williams and OG David Snow on the Bills roster. Snow signed as a free agent with Buffalo in 2012.

Goodwin is the sixth Texas WR to be drafted in the Mack Brown era and the third in the last six years after Jordan Shipley was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round in 2010 and Limas Sweed was chosen in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Other Texas wide receivers chosen in the Mack Brown era include Roy Willliams (Detroit Lions, first round, 2004), Sloan Thomas (Houston Texans, seventh round, 2004) and Wane McGarity (Dallas Cowboys, fourth round, 1999).

In the Longhorns 31-27 win over Oregon State in the 2012 Valero Alamo Bowl, Goodwin caught four passes for 68 yards including a 36-yard game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also had a 64-yard TD run in the second quarter and finished with 132 all-purpose yards to lead the team.

Goodwin has played in 50 games including 22 starts for the Longhorns at wide receiver and currently ranks 11th on the Texas career receptions list (120) and sixth on the school’s career kickoff return yards list (985). He has amassed 2,776 all-purpose yards in his career. As a freshman in 2009, he posted 30 receptions (No. 3 on UT's freshman single-season list) for 279 yards and a TD. The four-time member of UT’s Athletics Director’s Honor Roll also earned national All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA.

Goodwin is also a world-class track and field Olympian who represented the United States in the long jump at the 2012 Summer Games in London. Goodwin won the long jump title at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials (27.0425), the 2012 NCAA Outdoor (27-0) and Indoor (25-04.75) Championships, the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor (26-10.50) and Indoor (25-04.75) Championships, the 2011 U.S. Outdoor Championships (27-4), the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor (26-9.75) and Indoor (26-7) Championships, the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships (26-9), and the 2010 Big 12 Outdoor Championships (26-0.75). He is also a two-time World Junior Champion (long jump, 4x100m) in track and field.Marquise Goodwin Drafted by Bills
