Same State, Bigger Stage for Spieth

Updated: Wednesday, April 3 2013, 08:01 PM CDT

There are study breaks that last longer than Jordan Spieth's tenure at The University of Texas.

"My number one goal going into school was to win a team national championship," Spieth told KEYE TV sports Wednesday. "It definitely made me a lot more comfortable in my decision [to turn pro]."

After one wildly successful season on the Forty Acres, Spieth took his shot at pro golf. Like most of his shots - it turned out okay. The 19 year old has won more than $530,000 in five PGA starts this year.

"Being able to adjust to college golf was a big confidence boost," said Spieth. "It helped me make the smaller transition up to here [to the PGA Tour]."

The TPC San Antonio is just a couple par 5's down I-35 from the Forty Acres, so Spieth will likely have solid crowd support this weekend. However, it will take a whole bunch of burnt orange to even notice Jordan's gallery, because he's playing with Rory McIlroy.

"I know Rory brings a huge following and it'll be nice to be in that moment and feel like it's a star pairing," said Spieth.

McIlroy is only four years older than Spieth, but since turning pro at age 18 he's won six PGA Tour events, including two majors. So what advice would the number two ranked player in the world give the Texas Ex?

"It's just about playing well when you have the opportunity to, and he seems like a good enough player to be able to do that," said McIlroy. "It's about believing in yourself that what you're doing is the right thing."

While Spieth may have only spent three semesters in college, he's not done learning. Jordan will have 36 holes Thursday and Friday to take notes from one of the best in the world.

"I look at what he did when he was in his younger years, and try to look at what I've done and the rise that he's had since then," explained Spieth. "It's been so fast at such an elite level. I need to be focused on how I need to do that."
