Texas Doctor's Discovery Could Stiff-Arm Concussions

Updated: Wednesday, January 15 2014, 02:47 PM CST

A Texas doctor's discovery could stiff-arm the negative effects of concussions through the power of a small pill.

Dr. James Lechleiter of San Antonio's UT Health Science Center has discovered a class of compounds that stimulate certain brain cells to protect against trauma immediately after a concussion.

He's secured a patent on a possible to new drug that could prevent long term effects such as memory loss, blindness, and chronic headaches.

"Some of the most dangerous injuries are where you shake it off and sort of tough it out on football field," said Dr. Lechleiter. "Our data suggests if we can treat that initial injury within a few hours, maybe 30 minutes, we can prevent long term development of these diseases.

The drug won't see the light of day soon, however. It must first go through several phases of clinical trials to ensure it doesn't have negative side effects in humans. Dr. Lechleiter is optimistic that the process won't last more than five years.
