Texas Golfer Jordan Spieth Turns Pro

Updated: Friday, December 14 2012, 03:28 PM CST
Men's Golf sophomore Jordan Spieth has elected to forego his remaining eligibility and declare professional status, the All-American announced Friday.

“The decision to turn pro was a difficult one, but I’m looking forward to the challenge of competing at the highest level and accomplishing the many goals I’ve set for myself on and off the course,” said Spieth, a member of UT's 2012 NCAA Championship team. “I owe everything I’ve achieved thus far to the support of my family, friends, teammates, and The University of Texas. While I’m proud of what my teammates and I have accomplished, I couldn’t be more excited to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a professional golfer. ”

The 19-year-old Dallas native earned First Team All-American honors and was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Spieth was one of three finalists for the 2012 Ben Hogan Award which is presented annually to the nation’s top amateur golfer.

Spieth joins Tiger Woods as the only other player in history to win multiple U.S. Junior Amateur titles (2009, 2011).

Spieth has already experienced success at the PGA Tour level, making the cut in six of eight professional events he’s played. His finishes include a T-21 and low amateur honors at this year’s U.S. Open, as well as being in contention to win at the 2010 Byron Nelson Championship while only 16-years-old. In addition, Spieth held the R&A’s No. 1 World Amateur ranking this year and had an undefeated record at the 2011 Walker Cup.  He also represented the U.S. at the 2008 and 2010 Junior Ryder Cups.

“Jordan Spieth is a remarkable young man,” said Texas Men’s Golf head coach John Fields.  “Though he is leaving early, he has left a positive, indelible mark on The University of Texas and our program. Jordan is first class – first class as a student, first class as a teammate. We will certainly miss him, but our future remains bright, and like him, this is a new beginning for all of us.”

Spieth joins the ranks of legendary Texas Men’s Golf team members that include Jhonattan Vegas, Harrison Frazer, Bob Estes, Tom Kite, Justin Leonard, and Ben Crenshaw. Texas Golfer Jordan Spieth Turns Pro
