The Leander Softball Family

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
The Leander softball team hasn't made the playoffs since 2008.

They're making up for lost time in a big way.

This weekend the Lions take on Hays with a trip to the state tournament on the line.  In all reality, they feel absolutely no pressure.

"It's the most fun group of girls I've ever been around," a jubilant Leander head softball coach Faye Fregia said.  "They love to play.  They are goofy, but get down and dirty when they have to.  I just stay out of their way -- let 'em have fun and be girls."

That's the easy part.  The hard part comes when the off-the-field problems hit -- which is where Breezy Lumsden and Laura Tibbs share something besides their love of softball.

Something they wish they didn't share.

"My parents don't usually call me in to talk, but they said, 'we've got an issue - mom has breast cancer," Breezy explained.

Her mom's immediate reaction was fear.

"I thought, oh God, I don't want to die," Kelley says.

Breezy's mom found out her diagnosis in May of 2012.  She had a lumpectomy, and endured eight weeks of radiation.

The Lions softball team rallied around the Lumsden's, doing what they could for them when they could.

Then it happened again.

This time, Laura Tibbs stepmom Tara found out she too had breast cancer in February.  Laura couldn't believe her ears.

"I don't know what I'd do without you, just freaking out," she explained.

Like Kelley, doctors caught Tara's breast cancer early.  Tara, though, decided on a preventative double mastectomy.  She's currently going through chemotherapy.

Once again, enter the Lions family.  They surrounded Laura and her family when needed.

The unintended twist – it's inspired the team throughout their playoff run, and they are two wins away from a trip to the state semifinals.
