US Takes On Germany In World Cup Match

Updated: Friday, June 27 2014, 02:53 PM CDT

The United States will advance to the second round of World Cup with a victory or a tie today against Germany, or a tie by Ghana and Portugal.

The Americans are 1-0-1 in Group G following a 2-1 win over Ghana and a 2-2 tie with Portugal. The Yanks will be without Jozy Altidore for the second straight game because of a strained hamstring.

A tropical downpour has flooded roads and is slowing traffic to the stadium in northeastern Brazil where the U.S. is playing Germany for a chance to advance into the World Cup's knockout phase.

Brazil's National Institute of Meteorology says more than 3 inches (76 millimeters) of rain has fallen in the city of Recife in the past 24 hours.

As kickoff neared, many streets in Recife were submerged in ankle- to thigh-high water. Several cars were stalled on multilane thoroughfares and cabs were hard to come by.

Rain is expected to continue on and off throughout the day, with temperatures forecast to hover above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius).

The game starts at 11 a.m. Follow KEYE TV on Twitter for updates: https://twitter.com/keyetv
