UT Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds Retiring

Longtime Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds announced his retirement this afternoon.

"I love The University of Texas, and I love the people. We’ve had a great run,” said Dodds. "I have been contemplating this decision for a while. (University of Texas President) Bill Powers and I have talked it over, and this is something I am ready to do at this time."

He will step down on Aug. 31 of next year.

Powers said in a news conference the university will begin a nationwide search for Dodds' successor today. He said there is no time frame for the hire but UT hopes to find the person over the next few months.

"DeLoss Dodds is one of the giants of college athletics," Powers said. "His vision reshaped The University of Texas and the entire NCAA, and it’s been an honor to both work with him and call him a friend for so many years."

Dodds said the football team's struggles have nothing to do with stepping down.

"I would've done this if Texas is 4-0 or 2-2," he said.

Dodds has been at Texas since 1981.
