What's In A Name? For Marlow, There's Plenty

Updated: Thursday, May 3 2012, 01:14 AM CDT
Texas second baseman Brooks Marlow currently ranks second on the team in RBI's and third in runs scored.  Marlow gives credit to his father Mike for molding him into a ballplayer.

"I played for him my entire life," says Marlow.  "I wouldn't be here without him."

However, Brooks' mother Page deserves some love, too.  She helped her son make a name for himself, with the name of one of the Longhorns' all-time greats.

While Page was pregnant with Brooks during the spring of 1993, Brooks Kieschnick (then a junior at Texas) was on his way to winning a second straight National Player of the Year award.

"I would hear his name on the news every night," says Page.  "He was such a great player.  So I said 'I want to name my son after Brooks, so maybe he'll grow up to be a great baseball player one day."

Despite hailing from Giddings, only an hour away from Austin, Marlow had never met his namesake until this year's UT Alumni Game.  When Kieschnick was introduced to the player who shares his name, the three-time All-American says he felt more than just honored.

"I felt really old that there's someone named after me who's now playing baseball at Texas," said Kieschnick.  "But it's such an honor and I'm really humbled by it.  Brooks [Marlow] is such a good guy, and will do anything to help the team win, so that makes me even more proud."

Marlow has the right guy in his corner, as he tries to carve out his very own Longhorns legacy.  Even if he is sharing a name through the process. What's In A Name? For Marlow, There's Plenty
