Will Pro Golf Return To Austin?

Updated: Tuesday, October 23 2012, 09:58 PM CDT

Festivities for the 2012 AT&T Championship have kicked off in San Antonio.  The Champions tour event itself begins on Friday and concludes Sunday.

Three years have passed since Austin last hosted a Champions Tour event – a disappointment to almost everyone involved in the city’s golf community.

“This is the hottest city in the US right now,” explains former Longhorn and legendary golfer Tom Kite.

“It's mystifying we don't have a sponsor."

A sponsor became an issue almost immediately following the 2009 event.  The Security and Exchange Commission accused Triton, the tournament’s sponsor, of fraud.  Triton fooled its investors into an insurance scam worth millions.  Big time athletes like Earl Campbell, Ty Detmer and many others saw their savings wiped away in a Ponzi scheme.

No one has stepped in to sponsor the tournament since.

Count Kite in the group that believes Austin will one day host a Champions Tour event again.

“Believe me – we are talking to officials in Champions Tour to get more aggressive in pursuit of a title sponsor,” says Kite.  “In the next few years we'll be able to come up with a Champions Tour event.”Will Pro Golf Return To Austin?
