Working for the Geek-End: Austin Hosts Geek Bowl VII

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
Super Bowl XLVII, sport's biggest spectacle ended in controversy. Should the 49ers final play have been flagged as holing or pass interference? It's still a question. The Super Bowl doesn't like questions. The Geek Bowl, though? They're all about them.

"It's not your grandmother's trivia," said Matthew Angell, Director of Operations for Geeks Who Drink.

Saturday, Austin Music Hall will host the largest live trivia event in the United States. It's the seventh annual Geek Bowl. Eight rounds, eight questions each. But it's much more than just trivia.

"It's team-style Jeopardy, meets the Oscars meets methamphetamine," said Geeks Who Drink founder and Quizmaster-in-Chief John Dicker.

In 2006, Dicker founded Geeks Who Drink. Six nights a week in 295 bars across 25 states, quizzes are hosted by Quizmasters. Saturday, 150 teams comprised of up to six people, from 17 different states will vie for the title of geekiest of the geeks.

They'll also be playing for $6,000. That's the cash prize for the Geek Bowl champion.

"You can show off all the stuff that you've crammed into your dome that you're never going to use again in your life," said Angell. "You can show everybody why your brain is the biggest and the baddest."
