Bastrop Animal Shelter Volunteers Tell Their Side
Volunteers banned from the Bastrop Animal Shelter contacted KEYE TV Friday to tell their side of the story.
Dozens of volunteers claim they were barred from the facility after exposing unsanitary kennel conditions and questionable medical decisions made by the director. The volunteers took their concerns to county commissioner who voted unanimously to back Diane Mollaghan. The volunteers feel they're being vilified for going public.
"It's sort of like they're punishing us for making this public and letting her portray that we have a vendetta against her and that is not the case," said Cynthia Wickliffe.
"There have been starving mother dogs that have been put into quarantine. Not because they did anything wrong but because they were scared," said Amanda Smith.
"We're not lying we felt like we finally had to speak up for the animals," said Lorraine Joy.
Mollaghan has until mid-February to provide county commissioners will an operational plan and volunteer contract. Until that contract is approved by the court, volunteers will not be allowed back in the shelter. They'll also be required to complete a volunteer orientation.
