90-year-old Cruise Passenger Never Received Heart Medicine

A heartfelt reunion for 90-year-old Louise Smith after she returned home to Austin from spending five days stranded on the Carnival "Triumph."

Smith dealt with power outages and unsanitary conditions, but worse, her heart medicine was dwindling.

She said now that she has returned home life is getting back to normal.

"I’ve been mostly resting, just sleeping, and taking my medicine," Smith said. "My husband has been fixing me breakfast, and so personally I'm in good shape."

Smith and other passengers dealt with power outages and unsanitary conditions, but even worse, her heart medicine was dwindling.

Back home, her health was her husband Joe's main concern. He said he asked the cruise line several times to give her extra medicine and that each time he called he got the same response that they "were not sure." Only after Louise returned home did Joe find out she never received the medication.

"I wasn’t breathing as good as I wanted to," Louise said. "You can die with what I have if my blood pressure gets too low. I just stayed calm."
The Smiths say they're not taking legal action and Louise is focusing on the silver lining. She praised the ship's crew and the other passengers on board that maintained a good attitude.

"I just looked at it a different way, and whatever way they looked at it is because they are too pampered," Smith said.
