Texas Education Commissioner Speaks Amid Calls For 2nd STAAR Deferral


(AP) -- Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams speaks a day after Gov. Rick Perry urged him to again delay requiring high school students to have standardized test scores factored into their final grades.

Williams speaks Friday, November at 11 a.m. at the 27th Annual Texas Assessment Conference.

Perry wants to extend a deferral of the "15 percent rule" until the 2013-14 school year. The Texas Education Agency already gave high school students a break from the requirement this year. They still, however, must pass the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR.

State Sen. Dan Patrick, chair of the chamber's education committee, has filed a bill to make the exemption permanent.

Williams has thanked Perry and Patrick for their leadership on the issue, says he's reviewing the rule but won't announce a decision immediately.
