Black Friday Just Another Day as Shopping Frenzy Moves to Thursday

The Friday after Thanksgiving arrived without much fanfare thanks to major stores jumping the gun and opening for business Thursday night instead of what had come to be called Black Friday.

It's unclear if the strategy will add to sales or just spread out the normal Black Friday shopping crowd.  A survey this month found about 17 percent planned to shop at stores that opened on Thanksgiving.

Black Friday got its name from retailers' claim that they actually operate in the red most of the year and finally go into the black when the holiday shopping season begins the day after Thanksgiving.
