San Antonio Double Fatal Accident Highlights Need for No Txt Zone

A 3-year-old boy died Friday after a fatal crash that instantly killed his father along I-10 in San Antonio.  The Bexar County Sheriff's Office says a car clipped a telephone pole and jumped a curb mowing down an entire family as they wanted on the sidewalk.  The surviving family members were taken to the hospital in critical condition.  Some witnesses say the driver may have been texting.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Robbie Barrera here in Austin says, "We see them quite often.  We also see dangerous driving behavior on the road due to individuals taking their eyes off the roadway."

A study from Carnegie Mellon University suggests you're also taking your mind off the road.  The study finds that driving will using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.

The Texas Department of Transportation says these distracted drivers cause more than 400 fatal accidents in Texas every year.

That has Trooper Barrera asking drivers, "Was that message that you absolutely had to send at that time that important that you have to take someone's life?"
