Austin City Council OKs $15 Million For New Water Treatment Plant
Austin will spend another $15 million for a new water treatment plant.
Thursday morning the Austin City Council approved the spending increase for Water Treatment Plant No. 4. The total construction cost is now more than $523 million.
Some council members expressed concern before the vote because they believed the $359 million construction contract they had previously approved was a maximum amount, instead of a preliminary estimate. City Manager Marc Ott accepted responsibility for the confusion.
Austin Water spokesperson Jason Hill says the extra cost comes from dealing with environmental concerns along with having contingency money.
Water Treatment Plant 4 is near Lake Travis of RR 620 near RM 2222. It is scheduled for completion in 2014.
