Austin Police Increase Patrols Around Schools
In the wake of the Connecticut school shooting, Austin Police are increasing patrols around area schools.
Austin police are working with Austin Independent School District officers to put more eyes and ears around the elementary, middle and high schools. And they plan on beefing up patrols all week long -- but will reassess security needs after the holidays.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says the Travis County Sheriff’s Department has also deployed more deputies. He says it's a way to provide a level of comfort to the public but also show that officers are vigilant and nearby.
Currently there are no threats at AISD schools, but the police department is monitoring and says it takes the community as a whole to stay safe.
“It's not 100 percent safe proof. There is not a guarantee that the police departments and the schools can keep everyone safe, it's up to the community. When folks see somebody having some challenges or see anything suspicious they should let someone know so we can intervene,” says Chief Acevedo.
He says APD officers are trained for active shooter scenarios.
