Downtown Austin Post Office Closing Today, City PO Boxes Affected

If you're sending mail to the City of Austin, officials say be ready for some delays. On Thursday, Austin's longtime downtown post office is closing and moving about a half mile to 823 Congress. Around 2,000 customers, including the City of Austin, won't be able to access their post office boxes for five days.

The post office is moving into a more than 7,000 square foot building, currently housing the Austin Museum of Art, which is moving to the Mueller
District.

Officials warn if you need to send mail to the city's postal box, it'll be out of service the next five days. The good news: outgoing mail from the city will not be affected.

The new post office opens Wednesday, January 2. It'll house the P.O. boxes for the 78767 and 78768 ZIP codes. Postal officials say most of the 2,000 P.O. boxes at the downtown station belong to businesses.

The post office sold the property for the current downtown station a year ago to a development group behind some of the high rise condos in downtown Austin.
