Flyover At Hwy 290 And MoPac Opens
The flyover connecting westbound Hwy 290 to southbound MoPac is now open.
It’s expected to shave five minutes off commuter’s travel time. The flyover eliminates six stop lights drivers encountered driving in that direction.
It is part of an $8.4 million project. The flyover connecting northbound MoPac to eastbound Hwy 290 opened in early September.
Right now nearly 28,000 drivers use that stretch of highway. By 2032, 43,000 daily travelers are expected to use the new flyovers.
Transportation officials say in the first year of operation, approximately 44,000 fewer gallons of gasoline will be used and about 340 fewer metric tons of carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere.
The project’s estimated cost is $9 million well under the $13 million anticipated and approved by the Austin City Council. The City of Austin has agreed to pay for the project under a Pass-Through Financing Agreement with TxDOT and will be reimbursed 80 percent of the project’s expected cost over the next 10 to 15 years.
