New Federal Courthouse Opens In Downtown Austin
A Downtown Austin development project over a decade in the making has finally ended -- thanks to millions in taxpayer dollars.
The brand new federal district courthouse at Fifth Street and San Antonio Street opened for business Tuesday morning.
The building stands on the site once occupied by the infamous Intel building. That was the half-built shell abandoned by the chip maker back in 2001 after the 90s tech bubble burst.
The city had given Intel millions in incentives to build downtown
After the shell was imploded in 2007, the federal government used $110 million in stimulus money to buy the property and break ground on the courthouse in 2009.
