Christmas Bureau President Arrested During Traffic Stop

The president of a troubled Austin non-profit was arrested Wednesday morning during a traffic stop.

The assets of the Christmas Bureau were seized by the Texas Attorney General's Office last week after a criminal investigation.

The charity's assets were taken and a temporary injunction was issued against it to cease all operations after presents and donations given to it went missing. A hearing is set for Dec. 19 to see if the injunction is to be made permanent.

For years the bureau has teamed up with Operation Blue Santa to provide presents for less fortunate families in Austin. Weeks before distribution, the president of the non-profit, Shon Washington, was nowhere to be found.

KEYE TV talked to Washington almost two weeks ago, and he said the investigation is just a misunderstanding. When asked if he did anything wrong or took any money he said, "No sir, no sir, not a dime."

Now, police say Washington was pulled over in Northeast Austin on Berkman Drive for running a red light.

Police say Washington initially gave officers a false name. The officers told him they would run his fingerprints and that's when he provided his real name. He was arrested for providing a false name and officers then searched his vehicle and found methamphetamine.

He's been charged with possession of a controlled substance and failure to identify.

None of the charges are related to the recent trouble with the Christmas Bureau.

He is currently in the Travis County Jail and Austin police detectives say they will now use this as an opportunity to question him regarding that case because they could not located him previously.
