Man Carrying Sword Prompts South Austin SWAT Standoff
A man walking around with a sword and a cooking pan prompted a SWAT call early Wednesday morning.
Austin Police responded to a 911 call around 12 a.m. Wednesday morning near the 1700 block of Teri Road in south Austin just east of I-35 and north of East Stassney Lane.
Witnesses in the area say they were alarmed when they noticed a man walking around with a sword a cooking pan. When the suspect went inside his apartment, a woman called 911.
Officers say when they arrived they knocked on the suspect’s door, but there was no response. Police then obtained a key to the suspect’s apartment but the door was dead bolted.
Police say they were able to get the door open with a ram. When they entered the apartment, the suspect said, “I have a weapon.” According to police, the suspect said he would harm officers if they came into his apartment. Police left the building at that time.
The SWAT standoff ended close to three hours later. The suspect came out of his apartment around 2:30 a.m. without resistance.
