Cedar Park Police Arrest Former Leander ISD School Bus Driver


A former Leander ISD bus driver is charging with injuring a child in his care.

Cedar Park police arrested Helmut Derer, 67, Friday.

On Dec. 5, police say officers went to Capulin Mountain off Hwy 183 near Park Street on a report of a disturbance on a bus.

Two students told them a bus driver had assaulted a nine-year-old elementary school student.

Investigators say Derer pushed the student down into a seat causing him to strike his head against the side of the bus. Derer then used his knee to strike the child’s leg, police say.

Derer is charged with injury to a child, a 3rd degree felony.

A Leander ISD spokeswoman says the district fired Derer shortly after the incident.
