Austin-Area Adds New Phone Number Area Code
We all know what 512 is, but what about 737? That’s the new area code that has been approved for the Austin-area.
When you hear 512 most people think Austin because it’s the only area code around. But that’s about to change because of a new area code overlay that has been approved for the Austin-area. An area code overlay is an additional area code to the same geographic region.
But will Austinites embrace the new area code? We spoke with the folks over at Do512.com, a comprehensive website of events happening in the Austin area. Matt Mandrella says, “It is a badge of honor to have that 512 area code, being an Austin original, because when people think of Austin they think of 512.” Mandrella also understands Austin is a growing city, “everybody moves to Austin because it’s such a great place to live and the quality of life is awesome, the people are awesome so who are we to say that more people can’t come into our city and experience it?” he says
If you have a 512 number, no need to worry, you’ll still be able to keep your number but starting June, 2013 you’ll need to start dialing all ten digits. The new area code will start being distributed on July 1st, 2013.
