Study: SH 45 SW One Of The Worst Transporation Projects

The Sierra Club has rated the proposed SH 45 SW toll road as one for the worst transportation project in the country.

The environmental group used oil use, health, economic, land use and the environment as the criteria for the study.

The study said the 3.5 miles toll road would pollute the water over the Barton Springs portion of the Edwards Aquifer, which feeds Barton Springs Pool.  It sites runoff from motor oil, dirt, road particles, tire particles and car fluids contaminate bodies of water.

"The porous limestone aquifer is recharged as rainwater flows into fissures in creek beds and into open natural land. The road threatens the endangered Barton Springs salamander, passes through endangered Golden-cheeked warbler habitat, and passes directly over at least one cave known to harbor extremely rare cave-dwelling invertebrates," the study says.
