Fighting Back: Foresight Helps Austin Man Recover Stolen Electronics
The day after Christmas, Alex Holder says that as soon as he walked into his house he quickly realized he had been robbed.
Someone had snatched up his high priced electronics and tools. He quickly called police and tried to track down his Apple products.
"There's Apple software like Find My iPhone and stuff, but that immediately got disabled," Holder says.
But he remembered writing the serial numbers down to most of the stolen items. He also installed anti-theft software that tracks your phone or laptop 24 hours a day.
That software is free to download at preyproject.com. "It sent me a report like three weeks after it was stolen," Holder says.
The report not only had information on where his laptop was but also what websites the man using it was visiting and Wi-Fi networks he was connected to.
After doing a quick Google search he was able to find an address for the Wi-Fi network and get a screen shot with the logged on name -- Raul Saldana. Police found Saldana in the same neighborhood. After searching his home they found Holder's laptop, matching it up with the serial number he provided, along with a stolen gun and drugs.
Saldana is charged with possession of cocaine and more charges are pending.
Police are continuing to check data bases and the internet to track down the other stolen items by serial number.
