AISD Board Approves 2 Single-Sex Schools
The Austin Independent School District Board voted Monday night to approve the creation of two new single-sex schools.
The schools will be at Garcia and Pearce middle schools. The vote was 5-3 with a price tag of about $18 million. Parents would still be able to opt their children out.
In front of a packed house, board members heard parents, teachers and community members speak out for the last time for and against the proposal.
Another proposal would make the Alternative Learning Center in East Austin into a school for young men. That had still not been voted on by 10 p.m.
The three schools would open for 2014 - 2015 academic year.
