Houston-Area Man Killed In Algerian Standoff
The family of a Nederland man is confirming to KFDM News in Beaumont that he was killed in the hostage standoff in Algeria.
Victor Lovelady, 57, died during the standoff. The FBI called his family in Nederland Saturday and told them of his death. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, brother and other relatives.
Lovelady lived in the Houston area but was born in Nederland and has many relatives there.
He had worked in Algeria only ten days when militants attacked the natural gas plant last Wednesday. It was supposed to be a 28 day assignment.
The attack began when a militant group tried to hijack two buses at the plant. They were repelled, but then seized the refinery.
Five Americans were freed before Saturday's final assault by the Algerian military.
Two other Americans survived at the plant. The overall death toll is more than 80.
