Property Tax Deadline Tomorrow
If you've been holding off paying your property taxes, heads up: Thursday is the last day to pay up or you'll have to pay more.
Travis County officials are expecting big crowds at the main office on Airport Blvd. on Wednesday and Thursday. The deadline to pay inside is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. at the satellite locations. If you're mailing the check, make sure it's postmarked by midnight Thursday. You can also pay online. Credit cards will mean a 3% payment fee or an electronic check between $3 to $40. If you're paying online, make sure your bank postmarks it by then or you'll get hit with penalties and interest. About 95% percent of people pay on time, the highest collection rate in Texas.
"If people miss the deadline, 7% penalty and interest accrue immediately, and the longer that goes on, it could go up to 24% by the end of the year," said Bruce Elfant, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector. "So we encourage people who aren't going to be able to pay all of their property taxes by the deadline to contact us and work out a payment plan."
Elfant says the county will start going after delinquent payments Friday, and that 99 percent of people typically pay by the end of the year.
If you haven't gotten your property tax bill, you can call the county or go their website.
