Austin Council Postpones 311 App Vote

The Austin City Council has postponed a vote on a software contract bid after KEYE TV exposed its six-figure cost.

Under the terms of the contract, Motorola would create a new app for 3-1-1 non-emergency services, but it would cost more than $850,000.

The City of Cedar Park developed a similar app whose up-front cost was only $2,000.

Council Member Laura Morrision says she wants city staff to consider a local option.

"Lots of folks in town are technology commissioned and others in town that really have a lot to add and figure out if this is the right approach," she says.

Officials say 100percent of the app would be funded through revenue Austin Energy receives from your bills.

The council will take up the matter again on February 14.
