Austin Officer Shot During Police Pursuit
A suspect is accused of a list of crimes that spanned three different locations Monday afternoon. Austin police say a man robbed an armored car, sent police on a pursuit, shot an officer and carjacked an innocent bystander.
The officer is in stable condition recovering at University Medical Center Brackenridge.
It started at 3:15 p.m. when an armored car was making a delivery at the Capital Plaza Shopping Center on I-35 in North Austin. Police say that's where the suspect walked in, fired multiple shots, terrifying the clerk who was frantically screaming.
"He ordered the clerk to shut up," says Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. "The suspect took the money bag from the driver and fled the scene in a vehicle."
APD says a witness immediately called 911, giving them the information they needed to track down the car headed toward the Springdale Shopping Center on Hwy 183 near Manor Road.
"At around 3:28 the suspect stopped, exited the vehicle and fired several rounds at Austin police officers who were attempting to stop him," Chief Acevedo said. "Our officer, during the gunfire, sustained a penetration wound to one of his knees."
From the sky to the ground, SWAT and Austin police officers closed down the area looking for the suspect. At one point the man carjacked an innocent bystander at gunpoint, ordering the victim to drive him to another location. It was that person, police say, who called police enabling them to arrest the man at an apartment in the 9400 block of Hwy 290.
No other victims were injured.
