Several Attend Teacher Customized Concealed Handgun Course In Austin

It was not the typically concealed handgun license class. The Stunt Ranch in Southwest Austin held its first-ever teacher customized course.

There were 10 teachers in all taking the one-day course on Sunday.

Doug Rensi works in the Austin area school system and said he does not own a gun.

“I look at this as a step in a process for being prepared. Rensi said. “I don't want to be in a position where I can't do anything about it. All the people who have been victimized have been in helpless situations. All the incidents that have happened with guns on campuses are in gun free zones, so the logic to me dictates to me if there are no guns the only people with guns are the bad people.”

Amy Hollinger is the director of a small private school and has been in the school system for 17 years. She said she thinks if someone is ready while waiting for law enforcement, outcomes for the recent school shootings could have been different.

“It’s the number one priority safety and security of students,” Hollinger said. “I feel like the response time might contribute to more people getting injured.”

Rensi said the best thing for teachers is to be prepared for any situation to protect the well-being of students.

“We are on the front lines anyway so we might as well be prepared,” Rensi said.
