Bastrop County Commissioner Arrested For DWI

A Bastrop County Commissioner was arrested Tuesday night for driving while intoxicated.

According to court documents, at around 9:20 p.m. a Bastrop County sheriff's deputy responded to a call that a truck had driven through a fence in the 330 block of Goertz Drive on the north side of Red Rock, a town about five miles southwest of Bastrop.

The deputy encountered John Calvin Klaus, Bastrop County precinct 3 commissioner, standing next to the truck. The deputy also saw two Natural Light beer cans in the truck, according to the arrest affidavit.

The deputy could smell alcohol on Klaus' breath and observed him stumbling. Klaus admitted to drinking one beer earlier that evening but refused to perform a field sobriety test, according to court documents.

He was arrested and taken into custody by the deputy. He is charged with driving while intoxicated and open container.
