Truck Driver Dies In I-35/Slaughter Wreck

A driver of an 18-wheeler was killed on Interstate 35 in South Austin Tuesday morning after crashing into an overpass pillar.

Austin police say it happened at around 11:30 a.m. The truck was heading northbound on I-35 when, for an unknown reason, it swerved and hit a guardrail and then a pillar under the Slaughter Creek overpass.

The driver was ejected from the truck, which burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Austin/Travis County EMS reports the truck hit two other cars. The drivers suffered non life-threatening injuries.

I-35 northbound at Slaughter Lane was shut down as police gathered evidence. The truck was hauling window sealant, according to Austin police, and is not hazardous to the environment.

The northbound lanes of I-35 are expected to be back open by 5 or 6 p.m. The Slaughter Creek overpass will stay closed for one to two days as engineers with the Texas Department of Transportation inspect it for damage.
