Families Testify At Capitol To Real Dangers Of Texting While Driving
Texas lawmakers Tuesday heard first hand from the survivors of distracted driving crashes in Texas. The family members each brought a photograph to put a face to the tragedy. The meeting was hosted by Rep. Tom Craddick (R-Midland) and Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Austin), authors of House Bill 63 and Senate Bill 28 which would ban all texting while driving in Texas.
The Texas Legislature passed a ban on texting while driving in the last session. But it was vetoed by Gov. Perry who said education and not a ban was the best solution to the problem. Senate Bill 28 and House Bill 63 are named in honor of Alex Brown a 19 year old from Wellman near Amarillo. Alex died in a single car accident as she drove to school during her senior year in high school. Her mother provided emotional testimony that Alex lost her life to texting while driving.
