Police: Hit And Run Accidents A Major Problem In Austin

Police say hit and run accidents are a major problem in Austin. Friday morning there were two hit and runs within four blocks of each other.

But that's just a drop in the bucket. In Austin, Police say 9000 drivers fled the scene of a crash in 2012.

The same trend is being seen this year. Since January there have been 700 crashes. Sgt. David Daniels of the Austin Police Department says "a lot of people leave the scene for various reasons, they range from no driver's license, to no insurance to being under the influence, DWI."

But what if you're a victim, driving down the street, hit by a car that takes off? Police say if you're not hurt, make sure and gather as much information about that driver as possible. "A lot of people carry cell phones nowadays, it's easy to take a quick picture of a license plate or write it down, take pictures of the driver and I do caution people not to chase people down because we are dealing with a property crime" says Sgt. Daniels.
